What is GST?
GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a single indirect tax levied on the supply of goods and services in India. It replaced multiple taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty on 1st July 2017. GST is collected at every stage of the supply chain and is ultimately borne by the end consumer.
GST Rates in India
The GST Council has classified goods and services into four main tax slabs:
- 5% — Essential items like food grains, medicines, economy hotels
- 12% — Processed foods, business class air tickets, some electronics
- 18% — Most goods and services including soaps, electronics, restaurants
- 28% — Luxury items like cars, tobacco, aerated drinks
How to Calculate GST?
There are two scenarios where you need to calculate GST:
1. Add GST (Exclusive): When you know the base price and need to add GST. Formula: GST Amount = Base Price × GST Rate ÷ 100. Example: ₹1,000 at 18% → GST = ₹180, Total = ₹1,180.
2. Remove GST (Inclusive): When the price already includes GST and you want to find the base. Formula: Base Price = Total × 100 ÷ (100 + Rate). Example: ₹1,180 at 18% → Base = ₹1,000, GST = ₹180.
